history

prehistory

The middle Murgtal in the northern Black Forest , with its large forest deposits and the strong water at that time, offered the prerequisites for the settlement of a large number of wood processing companies as well as cardboard and paper manufacturers , as far as below the town of Gernsbach . Already in the middle of the 16th century logging and debris flow was carried out in this region, which was needed to move wood - bound to rafts - for shipbuilding in Holland.

1883-1914

Eugen Holtzmann from Karlsruhe can be described as one of the originators of the core cell of this key industry in the Murg Valley . Together with August Fischer and Johannes Dorn, who was replaced by Wilhelm Oechelhäuser in 1886 , on May 1, 1883, he founded E. Holtzmann & Cie. oHG . In 1886 the production of wood pulp began . Paper production began as early as the following year, 1887. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Murgtal plant in Wolfsheck took place in 1905. In 1907, the first newsprint was produced in Wolfsheck. Construction of the new Breitwies headquarters began in 1912.

1922-1945

Holtzmann oHG was converted into a stock corporation in the inflation year 1922 . Only shares in the form of registered shares with restricted transferability were issued to family members and relatives of the three company founders. The company's capital was 40 million paper marks . After the currency reform of 1924, this corresponded to a value of around 4.2 million Reichsmarks .

1997

In 1997 the Finnish group Enso Oy took over the company in which the WAZ media group had previously been the main shareholder.
