E. Tamás Schmidt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eligius Tamás Schmidt (* 1936 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian mathematician who deals with algebra and especially ligation theory.

After studying mathematics in Budapest, graduating in 1959, he was at the Mathematics Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Renyi Institute) and received his doctorate there in 1960 under László Fuchs (Congruence lattices of lattices). In 1969 he completed his habilitation and stayed at the Renyi Institute until 1991, most recently for 20 years as deputy director. In 1991 he became a professor at the Technical University of Budapest, reorganized the mathematical departments into a mathematical institute, which he headed from 1995 to 1999. In 2006 he retired.

In 1987/88 he was visiting professor at the University of Calgary , several times at the University of Manitoba , 1963 to 1965 at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg and 1980/81 at the University of Kassel.

In 1963, together with George Grätzer, he proved a sentence in association theory named after both. It says that every algebraic lattice is isomorphic to a congruent lattice of an algebra. Both published around 65 joint works.

From 1991 to 2007 he was on the editorial board of Algebra Universalis and he was co-editor of articles on algebra and geometry from 1970 and from 1971 to 1992 at Studia Sci. Mathematica Hungarica.

In 1974 he received the Mathematics Prize of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and in 2004 its Farkas Bolyai Prize. In 2006 he received the Szent Györgyi Prize and in 2008 the Béla Szőkefalvi Nagy Medal .
