Zentyal is a free Linux server distribution based on Ubuntu LTS for networks of small to medium size, which is an alternative to the Windows Small Business Server . As of version 3.0, Zentyal can serve as a complete replacement for the Windows Server Active Directory due to the integration of Samba4 . Zentyal can perform a wide variety of tasks in the areas of routing / gateway , security, network infrastructure, collaboration software and communication. The administration of the various tasks takes place via a uniform web interface.

Version 3.0 was released on September 13, 2012, which is based on Ubuntu 12.04. This version 3.0 replaces version 2.2, which was published on September 16, 2011 and was based on Ubuntu 10.04. The previous version was known as the eBox . Zentyal is developed by the Spanish open source company eBox Technologies from Saragossa . In addition to a free community version (“Zentyal for free”), the manufacturer also offers a chargeable small business and an enterprise edition, which also include manufacturer support and updates. In addition, the manufacturer also offers paid training courses.

The groupware solution SOGo in combination with OpenChange is included as collaboration software . This means that the MS Exchange, ActiveSync, IMAP, POP, CalDAV and CardDAV protocols are natively supported. The central file sharing takes place via Samba . In addition to an e-mail solution, a full-fledged VoIP server and a server for instant messaging ( XMPP ) are also integrated.
