ELSHAM

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ELSHAM is a human rights organization in Jayapura , Western New Guinea ( Indonesia ). The abbreviation stands for Institute for Human Rights Studies and Defense in Indonesian . Some of their leading representatives like John Rumbiak live in exile .

The association campaigns against human rights violations and environmental degradation in the raw material- rich West New Guinea and reports regularly on the human rights situation in the part of the country that has belonged to Indonesia since the 1960s. The number of extrajudicial killings that have taken place there since then is estimated by ELSHAM at 100,000. One of the focal points of the conflict is the Grasberg mine operated by Freeport-McMoRan , about which there have been several bloody clashes in the past. In this context, ELSHAM sharply criticized the actions of the Indonesian militaryagainst protesters. ELSHAM representatives themselves were also the target of attacks, particularly because of their critical reporting. Rumbiak fled to the United States in 2002 after threats from the Indonesian police. There he was appointed as a visiting professor at Columbia University in New York .
