The eQ-3 AG is a 2007 by the ELV Elektronik AG out gründetes German technology company in the field of smart home , with headquarters in Leer .

eQ-3 sells its products under the HomeMatic, Homematic IP, MAX! as well as eqiva. In addition, eQ-3 is a contract manufacturer for innogy , Bosch and QIVICON , a smart home alliance of Deutsche Telekom .

Some of the Homematic IP devices are also sold under the own brand SilverCrest of the discounter Lidl.

Products

Homematic

Under the Homematic series (spelling of the manufacturer: HomeMatic), eQ-3 sells products that enable the control of simple functions up to complex scenarios in the house or apartment. In addition to increasing comfort and safety, the main focus will be on reducing energy costs. The central control unit CCU2 or CCU3 forms the core component of a Homematic installation. It is controlled via the WebUI user interface. The ISM type B band in the 868 MHz range is used for data transmission .

Homematic Wired

In addition to the radio components, the Homematic system also offers wired actuators. These are sold under the name HomeMatic Wired. These actuators communicate with each other via an RS485 bus system and can be integrated into existing network structures with the help of an adapter. The actuators can also be controlled via the central control unit. The Homematic Wired Actuators are usually devices for installation on standard DIN rails in electrical distribution systems.

Homematic IP

Homematic IP is based in part on the Homematic product range and comprises products from the areas of indoor climate, security and light. In contrast to the Homematic product range, the focus here is on the control, which is comparatively easy to configure even for beginners, via the smartphone app also developed by eQ-3 (available for iOS and Android ). Configuration and operation run via the Homematic IP cloud service operated by eQ-3 as long as the Homematic IP access point is used as a base station. The data stored in the Homematic IP Cloud are available there in anonymized form, as the user does not ask for any data during registration. If you use the Homematic CCU2 / CCU3 as the control center, no data is stored in the Homematic Cloud. Operation is therefore possible without the need for a cloud or even without the Internet. IPv6 and the SRD band in the 868 MHz range are used for data transmission . Homematic IP devices can be integrated into an existing Homematic system via the Homematic central unit CCU2.

Max

The Max product range (manufacturer's spelling: MAX!) Focuses on the control of temperature in living spaces either as a local radiator control or as a centrally controlled solution. Radiator thermostats, window contacts, wall thermostats and the smartphone app developed by eQ-3 are used. The Max series is also offered by eQ-3 as an OEM product.

Eqiva

The Eqiva product range includes manually programmable radiator thermostats, smoke detectors and door locks, which can be controlled and programmed either on the device itself or via Bluetooth using a smartphone app. Products of this series can be operated independently of the MAX !, Homematic or Homematic IP systems.

Availability of the Homematic IP cloud service

The cloud- based smart home devices sold under the Homematic IP brand suffered from problems with the Homematic IP cloud service on several days in 2017 and at the beginning of 2018 (up to the temporary failure of some installed components / impossibility of coupling new components on the user side). In all cases, eQ-3 was able to resolve the problems, but the communication between eQ-3 and the users and the speed of reaction were sometimes perceived as incomplete and delayed, especially in the case of the failures in 2017.

In the event of a cancellation on the weekend of 25/26 November 2017, users criticized the fact that the manufacturer did not restore the Homematic IP cloud service until the next working day (which was perceived as unusual for cloud service providers) after the weekend. Various smaller functions, u. a. the integration of the weather data and the so-called "if-this-then-that" function could only be fully restored in the course of the week. EQ-3 named a server update as the cause of the error, which led to unusually long response times. According to their own statements, this behavior could not be recognized in advance and therefore not anticipated, even despite internal beta tests.

On November 29, 2017, eQ-3 commented in detail on the company's Facebook page on the problems of the previous days and announced improvements in communication (further information channels and a separate area on the website to check the server status) and an expansion of the beta Test group.
