The Eisenbahn Sportclub Ulm is a sports club from Ulm .

history

In 1929, with the support of the Reichsbahn, railway workers founded the Reichsbahn-Turn- und Sportverein Ulm . Various departments quickly emerged: In addition to a soccer, gymnastics and athletics department, a shooting, snow running and bowling department were created.

In 1935, postal workers were also granted membership, after which the association was renamed the Reichsbahn- und Postsportverein Ulm . At the same time, the range of sports on offer was expanded to include heavy athletics and handball.

When the neighboring club FV Sportfreunde Ulm got into trouble in 1940 , merger negotiations took place in order to establish a stable club in Ulm's west town. In March of that year, the merger between Sportfreunde Ulm and Reipo Ulm was completed.

The Second World War brought sports activities and club life to a standstill. However, soon after the war ended, it was decided to reactivate the association. However, the occupying powers decreed that the old name could not be continued, so the revived club was christened Sportclub Ulm . In 1949 the club got its current name, Eisenbahn Sportclub Ulm . In 1952 the clubhouse was opened, which was financed by the construction of bowling alleys. These were rebuilt in 1972/73. In the same year a tennis department was formed in the club. From 1974 the association organized the “Weststadtfest” in Ulm.

1985 to 1987 the clubhouse was rebuilt and expanded. In 1988 the “Weststadtfest” was reduced to three days, and in 1991 it was discontinued entirely.

Departments

The ESC Ulm has eight departments:

  • Bowling
  • tennis
  • Gymnastics (with volleyball)
  • Soccer
  • Table tennis
  • Taekwondo
  • fishing

Some of the teams from the individual areas attracted national attention.

Bowling

The bowling department is the most successful area of the club. In recent years, the women's and men's teams have played in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga again and again. In March 1988, the ESC Ulm hosted the German bowling championships. In June 1994 the railway workers' bowling world championships were organized by the department. Every year, shortly after the New Year, the high-class Top12 tournament is organized, in which the best 12 women and men from the German leagues bowl.

Soccer

In 1938, the team established in 1930 rose to the district class, but the beginning war slowed down activities. In 1946 the newly founded team was assigned to the Donau / Iller group class. After a midfield position in the first year, the establishment in the top group succeeded in the following years. 1950 succeeded the district championship, which entitled to participate in the promotion games to the Landesliga Württemberg , at that time the second highest division in Germany. There the team prevailed. However, the team clearly missed relegation with nine points behind SG Untertürkheim and had to be relegated directly back to bottom with only twelve points from 24 games. In the 1950/51 season, the first ever WFV Cup could be won. The success from the cup could be continued in the A-Class, where the championship was successful. However, the team failed in the promotion games.

In the following years, the team of the ESC Ulm played for promotion, but could no longer prevail. The club was also regularly among the favorites in the district cup, but it was not until 1961 before the first title was won. In 1973 the company was relegated to the B-Class, and in 1976 it was returned to the A-Class. After the team could not play on their own pitch due to regeneration work and had to move to the VfB Ulm pitch , they relegated to the B-class in 1979. It was not until 1988 that he was promoted to the district league, followed by relegation in 1990. In 1993 the ESC Ulm was champion of the district league A and district cup winner. Also in the following season they played with the front in the district league, but was intercepted at the end of the season by the second team of SSV Ulm 1846 , which rose to the state league. At least the title could be defended in the district cup.

The reputation of the elevator team was also strengthened in the following years: The ESC team was relegated from the district league in 1998, but managed to get promoted again immediately. However, the club only reached the relegation place in 2000 and had to return to the district league A after a defeat on penalties . In 2003 it even went to the district league B, from which the club rose again in 2005.

tennis

The tennis department of the ESC Ulm was founded on October 8, 1971. After courts and halls had to be rented at the beginning, the tennis court was opened in 1975. At the amateur level, the various teams in the club were successful and were able to advance to the top divisions of the WTB.

Table tennis

Table tennis has been played at the ESC Ulm since 1946. In 1950 he was promoted to the district class. In the following years the first team was district champion several times, but it was not until 1954 that they were promoted to the state league, which was the second highest division at the time. After the direct relegation, it took two years before the team qualified again for the national league. There she played until 1959. After the game was almost stopped in 1963 due to various departures, the table tennis department of the ESC Ulm now competes with several teams in the district class.
