ESTCube-1 is a technology testing and amateur radio satellite developed by students at the University of Tartu . It is the first Estonian satellite.

Structure and payload

ESTCube-1 is a 1U size Cubesat . The concept for a new type of electric sun sail is to be tested. Within a week, the satellite will unwind a 10 m long and 50 µm thick aluminum wire . This is then charged with a voltage of 500 V using an electron gun . The satellite transmits with the Estonian call sign ES5E on 437.505 MHz in the AX.25 operating mode and on 437.250 MHz in Morse code .

Mission history

ESTCube-1 was launched on May 7, 2013 from the Center Spatial Guyanais near Kourou in French Guiana together with the two earth observation satellites Proba V and VNREDSat 1a with a Vega rocket.

Shortly after the launch, the first telemetry signals were received by radio amateurs worldwide.
