EG-8
The designation EG-8 ( EG ) was used in Switzerland for a group of member states of the European Union . Today ( EU ) the group is increasingly referred to as EU-8 . These are the states that acceded on May 1, 2004 ( EU enlargement 2004 ) except Malta and Cyprus .
In this context, similar abbreviations are used for other groups of member states of the European Union :
- " EG-6 " - for the six founding members of the EEC ( European Economic Community )
- " EG-9 " - for the EG-6 plus the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark which joined on January 1, 1973
- " EG-10 " - for the EG-9 plus Greece, which joined on January 1, 1981
- " EG-12 " - for the EG-10 plus the states of Spain and Portugal that joined on January 1, 1986
- " EU-15 " - for the EC-12 plus the states Finland, Austria and Sweden that joined on January 1, 1995
- " EU-17 " - for the EU-15 plus the states of Malta and Cyprus that joined on May 1, 2004
