eVent (membrane)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

eVent is a waterproof, windproof, breathable membrane from the BHA Group, Inc., a subsidiary of General Electric based in Kansas City in the US state of Missouri . The film is used in functional textiles and outdoor clothing , e.g. B. jackets and shoes processed.

construction

The membrane is made of ePTFE, an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene . PTFE is best known worldwide under the name Teflon. Other known membranes, such as Gore-Tex , are also made from the same material and with the same functionality .

Difference to other membranes

The difference to other laminates lies in the manufacture of the membrane. Since ePTFE as such is sensitive to fat and could, for example, be damaged by human skin fat when worn, a very thin protective layer of polyurethane is normally laminated onto the film of all ePTFE membranes . Sweat can condense on this and so fat can be separated out. eVent dispenses with this additional layer - instead, each fiber is coated with polyester . This eliminates the condensation phase on the PU layer, which makes it possible to increase the "breathability" compared to conventional materials.
