Outdoor clothing

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Outdoor clothing , also outdoor - functional clothing called, provides protection from extreme weather during sports activities outdoors or the exercise of Nature Sport. The term outdoor clothing covers a very broad spectrum and includes clothing for skiing as well as clothing for tropical areas.

Areas of application

Outdoor clothing includes clothing for outdoor sports such as hiking , trekking , climbing , cycling , running , skiing , snowboarding . But outdoor clothing is also worn for leisure activities such as camping , geocaching , fishing or hunting .

Functionality

Outdoor clothing offers protection from a wide variety of weather conditions and ensures a good body climate even in extreme temperatures or when the wearer does sport. Depending on the type of sport or climatic region, very different requirements are placed on outdoor clothing. According to the onion skin principle, outdoor clothing can be divided into different layers of clothing, with each layer having specific functions.

The first layer of clothing regulates the body's climate and ensures moisture transport. When doing outdoor activities in cold regions, the first layer of clothing often has a warming effect. The second layer of clothing primarily has the purpose of insulation and has the task of either warming or ventilating, depending on the region. The third and outer layer of clothing acts like a protective shield against the weather.

As a rule, outdoor clothing has high breathability, short drying times and high durability. In addition, it offers the wearer a high degree of comfort and freedom of movement, depending on the situation.

Gadgets

In the field of outdoor clothing in particular, there are a large number of extras integrated into clothing. For example, items of clothing that are used when hiking, for example, have a particularly small pack size and light weight in order to save ballast during the hike. In textiles for warm climes or for sporting activities, fibers with silver ions are sometimes incorporated to prevent sweat odor. And other textiles offer integrated sun protection .

material

Commonly used materials are polyester , polyamide , polypropylene and wool . The artificial fibers can be found in significant quantities as microplastics in nature and are known to be the main cause of pollution in some areas, such as in the ice of the Forni Glacier .

Reception in popular culture

Outdoor clothing has been a fashion stereotype in features and cabaret since the 2010s . In 2010 Moritz Honert published on Zeit Online an analysis of the phenomenon that outdoor clothing is worn by city dwellers in particular, although it is marketed for use in nature. After the journalist Ulf Poschardt had described the milieu of the demonstrators as an "eco philistine " in the course of the Stuttgart 21 demonstrations in the world , Michael Angele criticized his portrayal as an enemy on Friday and emphasized the outdoor clothing as a characteristic of the demonstrators .

In 2013 Poschardt published an article under the heading “Hurray, we still work!” About the aesthetics of German functional and outdoor clothing, which is largely influenced by the Jack Wolfskin brand . He also addressed Chancellor Angela Merkel , who was photographed with a functional jacket on her hiking holiday. Lars Weisbrod published a defense of the Jack Wolfskin jacket in Intro magazine. In an interview with the taz, fashion theorist Barbara Vinken interpreted functional jackets , namely those from Jack Wolfskin, as a symptom of social escapism .

In 2014, Fabian Hartjes on Zeit Online described the phenomenon that German hip-hop artists used outdoor clothing in their videos, such as the black and red Jack Wolfskin jacket in a video by rapper Abdi . At an appearance in Rostock in 2016, the then SPD chairman and Federal Minister of Economics, Sigmar Gabriel, wore a red Jack Wolfskin jacket. In a style criticism in the Spiegel , Philipp Löwe wrote that the signal - colored jacket offered "more potential for identification for inclined SPD voters than the Ralph Lauren shirts that Gabriel usually wears so much". In cabaret, outdoor clothing and the Jack Wolfskin brand are used as clichés by Harry G , Gerd Knebel , Sebastian Schnoy and Thomas Lienenlüke , among others .
