Baron Dufferin and Claneboye , of Ballyleidy and Killyleagh in the County of Down , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland . The title is named after Dufferin County and Clandeboye Manor in Bangor , both in Northern Ireland .

Award

The title was bestowed on July 31, 1800 to Dorcas Blackwood , the wife of the recently deceased Sir John Blackwood, 2nd Baronet . The barony should be given to him in recognition of his support for the Act of Union 1800 .

Subordinate baronets

The father of the husband of the first baroness had been raised to Baronet , of Ballyleidy in the County of Down, on July 1, 1763 in the Baronetage of Ireland . Since his grandson, the 3rd Baronet, inherited his mother as 2nd Baron in 1807, this baronet title has been associated with the barony as a subordinate title. Not every legitimate baron had this baron dignity recognized formally.

The current baron also holds the title of Baronet, of the Navy, which was bestowed on September 1, 1814 in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom to Henry Blackwood , the seventh son of the 1st Baroness. He had been Vice Admiral of the Blue Flag in the Royal Navy . The title of baronet has been associated with the barony as a subordinate title since 1988, when its descendant, the 7th Baronet, inherited the title of 10th Baron and Baronet, of Ballyleidy, when the descendants of the older brothers Henry Blackwoods expired.

Other titles

Frederick Blackwood , the 5th Baron, was one of the most important diplomats and colonial officials of his time. He was raised on January 22, 1850, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Baron Clandeboye , of Clandeboye in the County of Down, whereby he received a hereditary seat in the House of Lords . In 1862 he added his wife's last name, "Hamiliton", and ten years later that of his paternal grandmother, "Temple", to his last name. On November 13, 1871, the elevation to Earl of Dufferin , in the County of Down, with the subordinate title Viscount Claneboye , of Claneboye in the County of Down followed. On November 17, 1888, he was finally awarded the titles of Marquess of Dufferin and Ava , in the County of Down and in the Province of Burma , and Earl of Ava , in the Province of Burma. All of these titles belonged to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and expired on May 29, 1988 with the death of the 5th Marquess.
