Marquess of Zetland is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . The title is named after the Shetland Islands , Zetland is an archaic spelling for Shetland.

The family seat of the Marquesses is Aske Hall near Richmond in North Yorkshire .

Award

The title was created on August 22, 1892 for the former Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , Lawrence Dundas, 3rd Earl of Zetland .

Subordinate title

Simultaneously with the Marquessat, the subordinate title Earl of Ronaldshay , in the County of Orkney and Zetland in the Peerage of the United Kingdom was awarded in 1892 . The Heir Apparent des Marquess uses this title as a courtesy title .

The great-grandfather of the first Marquess, Lawrence Dundas , had been appointed Baronet , of Kerse in the County of Linlithgow , in the Baronetage of Great Britain in 1762 . The title was awarded with the addition that, in the absence of male offspring, it could also be passed on to his brother Thomas Dundas and his male offspring. His son Sir Thomas Dundas, 2nd Baronet , was raised to Baron Dundas , of Aske in the North Riding of the County of York , in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1794 . His son, the father of the 1st Marquess, Lawrence Dundas, 2nd Baron Dundas was raised to Earl of Zetland in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1838. These titles are listed as subordinate titles to the Marquess.
