East Timor and Indonesia Action Network

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

East Timor and Indonesia Action Network ( ETAN ) is a grassroots network founded and based in the USA to support self-determination and human rights for the residents of East Timor and Indonesia .

The network was founded in 1991 shortly after the Santa Cruz massacre in the then Timorese capital Dili under the name East Timor Action Network . One of the co-founders was the well-known investigative journalist Allan Nairn .

aims

The main focus of the organization is on influencing US foreign policy (against US support for the invasion and occupation of East Timor by Indonesia from 1975 to 1999) as well as creating public awareness of US policy to create real independence in East Timor. ETAN is committed to the prosecution of crimes against humanity , war crimes and human rights violations in East Timor and Indonesia, and is committed to the democratic reconstruction of East Timor.

Common forms of action are letter campaigns, urgent actions and calls for boycotts, as most recently against the sporting goods manufacturer Nike . ETAN publishes an annual report on the situation in East Timor.

ETAN is a member of the International Federation for East Timor , an international network in support of East Timor.

On May 21, 2012 ETAN received the Ordem de Timor-Leste , one of the highest awards in East Timor, from the East Timorese President Taur Matan Ruak .
