Franz Paul Eberhard Riedel (born August 20, 1932 in Berlin ) is a German biochemist who taught at the Free University of Berlin from 1972 to 1998 .

Live and act

Riedel was born as the son of the film producer and dramaturge Richard Riedel and Annemarie. Rohrlach was born in Berlin-Lichterfelde . He has been with Julia Riedel born in 1963. Avgerinos married.

After graduating from high school in 1953, he studied chemistry at the Free University of Berlin , which he graduated in 1960 with a diploma in chemistry . In 1961 he accepted an assistant position at the Institute for Biochemistry at the Free University of Berlin. This was followed in 1968 by the doctorate under Randolph Riemschneider as Dr. rer. nat. with the dissertation contribution to the suitability test of organic high polymers .

After working from 1968 to 1972 as a research assistant and head of the biochemical laboratory of the Society for Epilepsy Research e. V. in Bielefeld-Bethel , he completed his habilitation in 1972 at the Central Institute for Biochemistry and Biophysics at the Free University of Berlin. In 1972 he accepted a position as professor of biochemistry at the Free University of Berlin.

From 1970 to 1973 he worked on the biochemical part of the memorandum on epilepsy of the German Research Foundation (DFG). From 1976 to 1986 he was chairman of the Biochemistry Examination Committee, and from 1990 he continued as a member. From 1992 he was deputy chairman of the Academic Senate's commission for teaching and studies. His retirement took place in March 1998. Until the summer of 2000, he was given the opportunity to continue to work scientifically at the institute.

research

The main topics of his research were:

  • The analysis of the biochemical and chemical prerequisites for the most specific and efficient transport possible of drugs, which regularly have significant side effects, into the target cells for the purpose of an effective therapy; z. B. in HIV infections or leishmania infections.
  • The fight against profound disorders of metabolic regulation in the postoperative area of liver and kidney transplants or in case of kidney failure.
  • The development of methods of manual and fully automatic fluorescence photometry, which has replaced working with radioisotopes in other areas of chemical analysis. This is particularly true in pharmacy as well as clinical and biochemical research.

Together with H. v. Baeyer, M. Nündel, H.-W. Schultis he developed about 3'-azido-carbonyl-thymidinyl LDL, process for its preparation and its use for the treatment of human immunodeficiency (HIV) infection , the patent specification DE 42 31 596 C2 1994th

further activities

For the Klostermühle Odernheim winery he designed a wine aperitif, consisting of Riesling wines from the Odernheim monastery Disibodenberg, as well as flowers of roses and other rosacea plants.
