Ebi (musician)
Ebi ( Persian ابی, eigtl. Ebrahim Hamedi , ابراهیم حامدی; * June 22, 1949 in Tehran ) is an Iranian singer and musician . He is one of the most famous representatives of Iranian pop music.
Life
Ebi completed a classical vocal training and sang as a soloist in the Iranian state choir. However, he decided against a career as an opera singer and turned to pop music. His first five own singles became number one hits in Iran.
In 1977 he traveled to the USA for a tour . The Islamic Revolution broke out in Iran while he was still there . Ebi decided to stay in the US permanently. In the following years he released several successful albums there. In his songs he repeatedly expressed himself critical of the political situation in Iran. He gained international fame, undertook numerous tours to all continents and gave sold-out concerts at the Sydney Opera House , the Kennedy Center in Washington , the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Lanxess Arena in Cologne . In Iran, despite its great popularity among the population, he was not politically welcome and did not return there for decades.
