Ebrahim M. Samba

Ebrahim Malick Samba (born December 27, 1932 in Bathurst , † July 28, 2016 in Banjul ) was a Gambian medic and the regional director of the World Health Organization for Africa .

Life

Samba studied at the University of Ghana and National University of Ireland . In 1963 he continued his education in Edinburgh and then returned to Gambia in 1964, where he was appointed Medical Director of the country in 1978 . Since 1964 he has been involved in the work of the World Health Organization and in many commissions. In 1980 he was elected director of the Onchocerciasis Control Program for West Africa , which he led for 14 years. Samba was named Regional Director of the World Health Organization for Africa in 1995, a position he held until he retired in 2005. Luis Gomes Sambo from Angola became his successor.

Samba published numerous scientific papers. 1977/1978 he was the third president of the Gambia Football Federation (GFA).

Until his death, Samba was chairman of the Banjul Muslim Elders Committee. He was also chairman of the Board of Governors of the Gambia Muslim Association (GMA). He died in the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul and was buried in Jeshwang Cemetery.
