Turbinicarpus horripilus is a species of plant in the genus Turbinicarpus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet horripilus means 'with staring hair, shaggy, staring with spikes'.

description

Turbinicarpus horripilus often sprouts with olive-green, spherical to elongated spherical bodies and fiber roots. The bodies reach heights of 7 to 18 centimeters and diameters of 4 to 6.5 centimeters. Their clearly pronounced conical cusps are 5 to 7 millimeters high. There is usually a single, protruding, straight, whitish central spine with a dark tip . It reaches a length of 12 to 18 millimeters. The 12 to 14 straight radial spines are white with a dark tip, protruding and 9 to 11 millimeters long.

The magenta colored flowers have a white throat. They are 2.2 to 3.1 centimeters long and have a diameter of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters. The elongated, greenish-red fruits turn yellowish-brown when ripe. They are 4 to 6 millimeters long and reach a diameter of 3 to 5 millimeters.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Turbinicarpus horripilus is common in the Mexican state of Hidalgo .

It was first described as Mammillaria horripila in 1838 by Charles Lemaire . Václav John and Jan Říha (* 1947) placed them in the genus Turbinicarpus in 1983 . Synonyms include Echinocactus horripilus (Lem.) Lem. (1839) and Gymnocactus horripilus (Lem.) Backeb. (1951).

Turbinicarpus horripilus is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN from 2002 it is known as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. classified endangered. In 2013 the species was named " Endangered (EN) ". H. highly endangered.
