Echinocactus parryi is a species of plant in the genus Echinocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Echinocactus parryi usually grows individually with spherical to short cylindrical, gray-green shoots and reaches heights of 15 to 45 centimeters with diameters of 15 to 30 centimeters. There are usually 13 ribs that are folded somewhat wavy with age. The mostly 4 straw to magenta colored, often bent back central spines turn gray with age. The longest of them is 4.2 to 5.9 inches long. The 6 to 11 yellowish to magenta-colored radial spines are straight to slightly curved.

The yellow flowers have a magenta tinge and a red throat. They reach a diameter of 5 to 7 centimeters. The initially fleshy, later dry and hard becoming fruits are covered with white wool and 2 to 4 centimeters long. They open with a basal hole.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocactus parryi is common in the Mexican state of Chihuahua at altitudes of 1200 to 1400 meters. The first description was published in 1856 by George Engelmann .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. listed as low risk.
