Echinocereus × roetteri is a natural hybrid species in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Her parents are Echinocereus coccineus and Echinocereus dasyacanthus . The specific epithet roetteri honors the German-American landscape and plant draftsman Paulus Roetter . An English common name is "Lloyd's Hedgehog Cactus".

description

Echinocereus × roetteri grows singly or as branches and then forms groups with up to 20 or more shoots . The green cylindrical shoots are 15 to 20 centimeters long and have a diameter of 8.5 to 11 centimeters. There are eleven to 13 humped ribs . The two to six straight, spread out central spines are reddish. They have lengths of 1.2 to 1.9 centimeters. The eleven to 16 spreading, straight, reddish gray radial spines are up to 1.5 centimeters long.

The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are mostly orange, but can vary in color from red to pink or yellow. They appear near the shoot tips, are 5 to 6 centimeters long and reach 4.5 to 7 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution and systematics

Echinocereus × roetteri is distributed in the United States in the states of New Mexico and Texas, as well as in neighboring Mexico .

The first description as Cereus roetteri by George Engelmann was published in 1856. Karl Theodor Rümpler placed the species in the genus Echinocereus in 1885 . A. Michael Powell, Allan D. Zimmerman and Richard A. Hilsenbeck recognized in 1991 that the species is a natural hybrid.
