Echinocereus dasyacanthus is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet dasyacanthus is derived from the Greek words "δασύς" ( dasys ) for "dense", "rough", "shaggy" and "άκανθα" ( akantha ) for "thorn". English common names are Golden Rainbow "Hedgehog Cactus", "Texas Rainbow Cactus", "Texas Rainbow Hedgehog" and "Yellow-Flowered Pitaya".

description

Echinocereus dasyacanthus usually grows individually with mostly cylindrical shoots that are tapered towards their tips. The shoots are up to 35 centimeters long and 13 centimeters in diameter. There are twelve to 21 ribs , which are divided into low humps. The yellow to slightly pink to dark brown thorns often cannot be divided into central and radial spines. The two to five or more central spines are protruding or spreading and have a length of 0.2 to 2.5 centimeters. The twelve to 25 spreading radial spines interlock with those of the neighboring areoles and are 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters long.

The flowers are mostly yellow, occasionally whitish, orange, pink or purple in color. They often appear on the sides of the shoots and reach 5 to 15 centimeters in diameter. The green to purple colored, mostly spherical fruits are fleshy and covered with sloping thorns.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus dasyacanthus is distributed in the United States in the states of Arizona , New Mexico, and Texas, as well as in the neighboring Mexican states of Sonora , Chihuahua, and Coahuila .

The first description by George Engelmann was published in 1848. Nomenclatory synonyms are Cereus dasyacanthus (Engelm.) Engelm. (1849) and Echinocereus pectinatus var. Dasyacanthus (Engelm.) NPTaylor (1984).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
