Echinocereus bonkerae is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet bonkerae honors Mrs. Frances Bonker from Pasadena .

description

Echinocereus bonkerae forms loose groups consisting of 5 to 15 shoots . The green, cylindrical to elongated shoots are 12 to 20 centimeters long and 4 to 7.5 centimeters in diameter, which are barely covered by the thorns. There are 11 to 16 ribs that are not noticeably humped. The single strong, upright, stiff central spine is white or light gray and pointed darker. It has a length of 6 to 7.5 millimeters. The 11 to 14 spread, straight, whitish or grayish radial spines are 1.2 to 2 centimeters long.

The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are magenta to reddish purple in color. They appear in the upper half of the shoots, are 5 to 6.2 inches long and reach the same diameter. The spherical, fleshy, initially green fruits turn red later.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus bonkerae is found in the United States in the state of Arizona and in the neighboring Mexican state of Sonora on dry grasslands.

The first description by John James Thornber and Frances Bonker was published in 1932. Nomenclatory synonyms are Echinocereus fendleri var. Bonkerae (Thornber & Bonker) LDBenson (1944), Echinocereus boyce-thompsonii var. Bonkerae (Thornber & Bonker) Peebles (1949), Echinocereus fasciculatus var.
