Echinocereus brandegeei is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet brandegeei honors the American botanist and plant collector Townshend Stith Brandegee . Spanish common names are "Casa de Ratas" and "Pitayita".

Echinocereus brandegeei has many shoots and forms large, loose clumps up to 2 meters in diameter. The light green, cylindrical, different sized shoots are creeping at their base and have upright shoot tips. They are up to 100 centimeters long and have a diameter of up to 6 centimeters and more. There are eight to ten ribs , which consist of well-defined, sharp-edged cusps. The shoots are densely covered with thorns varying in color from white to black . The four cross central spines are flattened, strongly angular, stiff and sword-like. They have a length of 3 to 13 centimeters. The ten to 18 stiff and circular radial spines are up to 2 centimeters long.

The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are light, more or less purple-lavender to light pink and have a bright red throat. They appear along the entire length of the shoot, are 5.5 to 9.5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 4 to 8.3 centimeters. The spherical fruits are red.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus brandegeei is common on the Mexican Baja California peninsula and some islands in the Gulf of Mexico .

The first description as Cereus brandegeei by John Merle Coulter was published in 1896. Karl Moritz Schumann placed the species in the genus Echinocereus in his work Complete Description of Cacti in 1898 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
