Echinomastus mariposensis is a species of plant in the genus Echinomastus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). English common names are "Lloyd's Mariposa Cactus" and "Mariposa Cactus".

description

Echinomastus mariposensis grows individually with spherical to slightly cylindrical, densely thorny, blue-green shoots that reach heights of 6 to 10 centimeters with a diameter of 4 to 6 centimeters. There are no ribs . The slender cusps are up to 5 millimeters long. The 2 to 4 central spines are whitish, often darken with age and are 1.5 to 2 centimeters long. The lowest of them is directed downwards. The 26 to 32 radiating, whitish radial spines lying on the shoot surface are 4 to 6 millimeters long.

The broad, funnel-shaped, pink flowers are up to 2.5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 3 to 4 centimeters. The greenish fruits are spherical.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinomastus mariposensis is found in the United States in the state of Texas and in the Mexican states of Coahuila and Nuevo León .

The first description was in 1945 by John Pinckney Hester .

Nomenclatory synonyms are Neolloydia mariposensis (Hester) LDBenson (1969), Echinocactus mariposensis (Hester) D.Weniger (1970, nom. Inval. ICBN article 33.3), Sclerocactus mariposensis (Hester) NPTaylor (1987) and Pediocactus mariposensis (Hester) Hester (1998).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
