Echinopsis bruchii is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet bruchii honors the Argentine photographer and entomologist Carlos Bruch (1869–1943).
description
Echinopsis bruchii usually grows individually. The depressed spherical shoots reach a diameter of up to 50 centimeters. There are up to 50 or more, low, clear ribs that are somewhat puffed up or tubercular between the areoles. The areoles on it are white. Twelve to 15 spread, yellowish or brown thorns arise from them .
The deep red flowers appear near the apex of the shoots and open during the day. They are 4 to 5 centimeters long and have the same diameter.
Distribution and systematics
Echinopsis bruchii is common in the Argentine provinces of Catamarca , Tucumán , Jujuy , Salta and possibly La Rioja .
The first description as Lobivia bruchii by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose was published in 1922. Alberto Castellanos and HV Lelong placed the species in the genus Echinopsis in 1943 .
Nomenclatory synonyms are Eriosyce bruchii (Britton & Rose) Backeb. (1936), Soehrensia bruchii (Britton & Rose) Backeb. (1938), Lobivia formosa subsp. bruchii (Britton & Rose) Rausch (1976), Trichocereus bruchii (Britton & Rose) F. Ritter (1980), Lobivia formosa var. bruchii (Britton & Rose) Rausch (1987) and Echinopsis formosa subsp. bruchii (Britton & Rose) Lowry (2002). In addition, numerous other taxa were synonymous with the species.
