Echinopsis crassicaulis often branches out from the base and forms small groups. The spherical to short cylindrical, green shoots are often tapered towards their tips. They reach heights of growth of up to 16 centimeters and have a diameter of 11.5 centimeters. There are nine to 14 broad and rounded ribs . The areoles on them are light brown and are up to 1.5 centimeters apart. From them arise light yellow, brown-tipped thorns , which become darker with age. The short, funnel-shaped, red flowers are up to 8 centimeters long and 9 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis crassicaulis is widespread in the Argentine province of Catamarca at medium altitudes of 2500 to 3000 meters.

The first description as Lobivia crassicaulis by Roberto Kiesling was published in 1970. Heimo Friedrich and Wolfgang Glätzle put the species in 1983 in the genus Echinopsis .

A nomenclature synonym is Lobivia grandiflora var. Crassicaulis (Backeb. Ex R. Kiesling) Rausch (1987). In addition, the following taxa were included as a synonym in the species: Helianthocereus crassicaulis Backeb. (1966, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 8.4) and Lobivia huascha var. Crassicaulis (Backeb.) Rausch (1976, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 8.4).
