Echinopsis hertrichiana is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet hertrichiana honors the American and curator of the Huntington Botanical Gardens in California William Hertrich (1878–1966).

description

Echinopsis hertrichiana grows individually or in groups. The spherical, glossy medium to light green shoots reach a diameter of up to 10 centimeters. There are about eleven sharp ribs that are furrowed across. There are circular, white areoles on them . The single, upwardly curved central spine is straw-colored and up to 2.5 centimeters long. The six to eight spread, yellowish-brown radial spines have a length of up to 1.5 centimeters.

The short, funnel-shaped, wide-open flowers open during the day. They are colored in various bright red tones and often have a whitish throat. The blooms are up to 6 centimeters long and have a diameter of 7 centimeters. The spherical fruits are small.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis hertrichiana is distributed in the Peruvian region of Cusco , in the west of Bolivia and in the Chilean province of Iquique at altitudes of 3000 to 3500 meters.

The first description as Lobivia hertrichiana by Curt Backeberg was published in 1933. David Richard Hunt placed the species in 1991 in the genus Echinopsis .

Further nomenclature synonyms are Lobivia backebergii var. Hertrichiana (Backeb.) Rausch (1975), Neolobivia hertrichiana (Backeb.) F. Ritter (1981), Lobivia backebergii subsp. hertrichiana (Backeb.) Rausch ex GDRowley (1982) and Echinopsis backebergii subsp. hertrichiana (Backeb.) EFAnderson (2001, nom. invalid ICBN -Article 34.1c, 33.3). In addition, numerous other taxa were included as synonymous in the variable species.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
