Echinopsis scopulicola is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet scopulicola is derived from the Latin words scopulus for 'mountain peak', 'cliff' or 'rock' and -cola for 'inhabitant' and refers to the preferred habitat of the species.
description
Echinopsis scopulicola grows shrubby , branches from the base with several upright, columnar twigs and reaches heights of 3 to 4 meters. The cylindrical shoots reach a diameter of 8 to 10 centimeters. There are four to six large and blunt ribs that are humped. The circular to oval areoles on them are white and 1.5 to 3 centimeters apart. Thorns are usually not formed. Occasionally three to four awl, brown thorns are present, which are up to 0.1 centimeters in length.
The funnel-shaped, white, fragrant flowers appear near the shoot tips and open at night. They are six to eight inches long. The green fruits reach a diameter of 4 to 5 centimeters.
Distribution and systematics
Echinopsis scopulicola is widespread in the Bolivian department of Tarija in the province of Burnet O'Connor .
The first description as Trichocereus scopulicola by Friedrich Ritter was published in 1966. Roy Mottram placed the species in 1997 in the genus Echinopsis .
