Echinopsis vasquezii is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet vasquezii honors the Bolivian cactus specialist Roberto Vasquez (* 1942).
description
Echinopsis vasquezii grows branching from the base and usually forms groups that can be up to 80 centimeters high. The cylindrical, fresh green shoots reach a diameter of 4 to 5 centimeters. There are twelve to 14 low ribs . The white areoles on them are circular and up to 1 centimeter apart. From them arise needle-like, light brown thorns that turn gray with age. The one to four central spines are crossed and 3 to 6 centimeters long. The ten to twelve radial spines arranged in a comb shape have a length of 0.8 to 1.5 centimeters.
The tubular, funnel-shaped, white flowers appear on the side of the shoots and open at night. They are up to 22 centimeters long and have a diameter of 14 centimeters. The spherical to egg-shaped, greenish-brown fruits are up to 6 centimeters long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Echinopsis vasquezii is distributed in the Bolivian departments of Cochabamba and Santa Cruz between Pojo and Comarapa at altitudes of 2400 meters. The species is probably only known from the type location .
The first description as Trichocereus vasquezii by Walter Rausch was published in 1974. Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in 1975 in the genus Echinopsis .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT)", d. H. listed as low risk.
