Echinos ( Greek Εχίνος ( m. Sg. ), Bulgarian Шахин , Turkish Şahin ) is a small town in the municipality of Myki in the Greek region of East Macedonia and Thrace . Together with the village of Melivia, it forms an urban district ( Dimotiki Kinotita Echinou Δημοτική Κοινότητα Εχίνου) with 3074 inhabitants (2011).

Echinos is located in the eastern Rhodopes at about 340 meters above sea level on the Xeró river and about 11 km from the state border with Bulgaria and 17 km north-northeast of the city of Xanthi . Echinos is a center of the Pomaks , a Muslim minority. The residents speak Pomak, Bulgarian and Turkish. There are three mosques , a market and a health station in the place with 2486 inhabitants and forms the economic center of the mountainous area. The main source of income is the cultivation of tobacco . Many local men speak a little German because they often work as guest workers in Germany or used to work there.
