Echium sabulicola is a plant species from the genus of the adder heads ( Echium ) in the family of the predatory plants (Boraginaceae).

description

Echium sabulicola is a bristly hairy, prostrate, ascending or erect, biennial or perennial plant that develops a few to several flower-bearing stems . It reaches heights of growth of 15 to 50 cm. The basal leaves are ovate to inversely ovate, the stem leaves are inversely lanceolate to spatulate, at the base they are pointed and hardly petiolate. The leaves are hairy more or less densely with white, adjacent or protruding bristles.

The inflorescences are more or less branched and loosely panicle-like . The calyx is 6 to 10 mm long at the flowering time and extends to 16 mm when the fruit is ripe. It has thick whitish bristles. The crown is 12 to 22 mm long, funnel-shaped and dark blue or pink to bluish purple in color. Usually one or two stamens protrude from the crown, the stamens are occasionally sparsely haired.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence and locations

The species is found in the western Mediterranean region and grows on roadsides, fields and sandy locations near the sea. It occurs in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Spain, the Balearic Islands, France, Italy, Sardinia and Corsica, Sicily and Greece.

Systematics

One can distinguish three subspecies:

  • Echium sabulicola subsp. sabulicola
  • Echium sabulicola subsp. decipiens ( Pomel ) Klotz : It occurs in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Spain, the Balearic Islands, France, Italy, Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily.
  • Echium sabulicola subsp. rifeum ( Pau ) Valdés : It occurs only in Morocco.
