Grenzer grew up in the 3rd generation of a stone carving company. After finishing school, he completed an apprenticeship in stonemasonry . After he u. a. worked in restoration in Berlin, he passed his master's examination as a stone sculptor. As a freelance sculptor, he made sculptures that were also shown at exhibitions. Grenzer mainly worked with natural stone such as marble , sandstone and granite . Bronze sculptures were also made.

1973 in Dangast the first encounters with the sculptor Anatol Herzfeld , a master student of Joseph Beuys , had a lasting impact on Grenzers. Herzfeld often came to Dangast, the North Sea resort on the Jade-Busten, which has attracted important painters such as the Brücke painters or Franz Radziwill since the turn of the century. He organized his “ working hours ” in Dangast , in which Joseph Beuys also sometimes took part. By working together, Eckart Grenzer not only became a friend but also a student of both.

In 1975 Grenzer was one of the co-founders of the Free Academy Oldenburg. In 1977 the Free Academy Oldenburg was invited to documenta 6 in Kassel, where Grenzer created a stone forest in 100 days. Further art actions and sculptures followed. In 1984 the 320 cm large phallus made of granite was built on the beach of Dangast , which is washed by the sea of the Jade Bay in the rhythm of the tides : a long controversial symbol for the encounter between the sexes and at the same time a boundary stone between the "female sea and the male land" .

Between 1995 and 1997, the Art Park people were created in the palace garden of the former count's summer residence in Rastede . In 2000 he created the sculpture The 7th Day of Creation in Dangast , in 2003 the sculpture "Ice-Man-Woman" was created in Vareler Hafen, behind the dike of the Jade Bay, and a year later he made the Friesendom , also in Dangast . Grenzer lived and worked in Oldenburg.

One of Grenzer's basic principles was to involve the audience in the work process. In this way, he involved the public in the production of his sculptures at the exhibition site. For the artist and his art, the exchange of stories and meanings represented an important social contribution in the process of creating his sculptures. Foreign cultures and encounters during his travels to many countries around the world also gave him important impulses for his artistic work.
