Eckford is a scattered settlement in the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders or in the traditional county of Roxburghshire . It is located about seven kilometers southwest of Kelso and northeast of Jedburgh on the right bank of the Teviot . Eckford is at an altitude of about 60 m.
history
To the east of Eckford are the ruins of Cessford Castle . In 1523 , the British military classified the former fortification of Clan Kerr as the third strongest fortress in Scotland. With the Eckford Tower , a tower house was probably built in Eckford in the early 16th century . English troops razed it in 1554 and 1570. Today there are no remains of the defense tower. The Kirkbank House was once a small mansion on the northern edge of Eckford.
In the 1880s there was a school in Eckford that could accommodate 100 students. In 1771, today's Eckford Church was built. At the site, however, there was a previous structure, fragments of which were integrated into Eckford Church.
traffic
The A698 , which connects Hawick in Scotland with Berwick-upon-Tweed in England , forms the main thoroughfare from Eckford. Before Jedburgh, the A68, which runs from Edinburgh to Darlington , is a trunk road within a few kilometers. In Kelso there is also a connection to the A699 .
To the west of Eckford, the Kalemouth Suspension Bridge spans the Teviot. The suspension bridge, built around 1835, is of little infrastructural importance today.
