Ed Sullivan
Edward Vincent "Ed" Sullivan (born September 28, 1901 in New York City , New York , † October 13, 1974 ibid) was an American entertainer . He is best known as the host of the Ed Sullivan Show , the popularity of which peaked in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Life
Originally a sports reporter, Sullivan wrote articles about plays. In 1938, Norman Z. McLeod filmed a story under the title Millionaire on Astray (There Goes My Heart) based on a story by Sullivan.
In 1948 he got a weekly late-night show on Sunday nights, in which promising talents like Elvis Presley or the Beatles regularly appeared in the Ed Sullivan Theater . Many stars, including the Supremes and the Jackson Five, owed a boost to awareness primarily because of their appearance on this show . But musicians like Creedence Clearwater Revival , the Doors , Janis Joplin , Jefferson Airplane or the Rolling Stones also performed there.
In total, between 1948 and 1971, CBS aired 1,068 editions of the Ed Sullivan Show , with each show lasting 60 minutes.
