Edappadi K. Palaniswami
Edappadi K. Palaniswami ( Tamil : இடைப்படி கே. பழனிசாமி Iṭaippaṭi Kē. Paḻaṉicāmi [ ˈiɖɛi̯pːaɖi ˈkeː ˈpaɻənisaːmi ], born March 2, 1954 in Andhiyur ) is an Indian politician of the regional party All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ). Since February 2017 he has been the incumbent Chief Minister of the state of Tamil Nadu .
Origin and beginning of political career
Edappadi K. Palaniswami was born on March 2, 1954 in the village of Andhiyur near Edappadi in the Salem district. He belongs to the Gounder caste, which is numerously represented in western Tamil Nadu. He is a farmer by profession.
In the 1980s, Palaniswami began a political career in the Tamil regional party AIADMK. When the AIADMK split into two factions after the death of the party founder MG Ramachandran in 1987, Palaniswami supported J. Jayalalithaa , who should ultimately emerge from the power struggle as the winner. In the state elections in 1989 he was elected for the first time from the constituency of Edappadi in the Tamil Nadu parliament as a candidate for the Jayalalithaa faction of the AIADMK. In the next election in 1991 he defended his constituency, but in 1996 he left parliament. In 1998 he was elected to the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the all-Indian parliament) for the AIADMK . However, he lost his seat in the 1999 election and was unable to regain it when he ran again in 2004. A candidacy for the Tamil Nadu parliament in 2006 was also unsuccessful.
In 2011 Palaniswami returned to the Tamil Nadu parliament as a member of the Edappadi constituency. As a result of the election, the AIADMK formed a government led by J. Jayalalithaas. Palaniswami was appointed Minister of Roads and Minor Ports to Jayalalithaa's cabinet. In the 2016 election, in which the AIADMK repeated its election victory, Palaniswami defended his parliamentary seat. In the new cabinet he was given responsibility for the Ministry of Public Works in addition to his previous areas of responsibility.
Promotion to Chief Minister Tamil Nadus
A few months after J. Jayalalithaa died in office on December 6, 2016, a power struggle broke out between O. Panneerselvam , who had initially followed Jayalalithaa into office, and Jayalalithaa's long-time confidante VK Sasikala , who had considerable background influence on their politics during Jayalalithaa's lifetime had exercised and had now developed ambitions for her successor. While the outcome of the power struggle was still open, on February 14, 2017 , the Supreme Court of India finally upheld Sasikala's conviction in an ongoing corruption case against her, which disqualified her from the office of Chief Minister. After Sasikala's conviction, Edappadi K. Palaniswami moved up to the head of the faction loyal to Sasikala. On February 16, 2017, the Governor of Tamil Nadus, C. Vidyasagar Rao , installed Palaniswami as Chief Minister and asked him to prove his majority in parliament by means of a vote of confidence . In the confidence vote that took place two days later, 122 AIADMK MPs voted for Palaniswami and only 11 for Panneerselvam. This confirmed Palaniswami as Chief Minister.
The power struggle between Palaniswami and Panneerselvam led to a brief split of the AIADMK into two splinter groups, the AIADMK (Puratchi Thalaivi Amma) led by Palaniswami and the AIADMK (Amma) led by Panneerselvam. After six months, the two factions reunited in August 2017. Palaniswami retained the post of Chief Minister while Panneerselvam was appointed Deputy Chief Minister for Finance.
