Chennamaneni Vidyasagar Rao ( Telugu సి.హెచ్.విద్యాసాగర్ రావు ; born February 12, 1941 in Nagaram , then Hyderabad , British India , today Telangana ) is an Indian politician who was Governor of Maharashtra until September 2019 . He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Life

Rao was born in 1941 in what is now Telangana. He studied law at Osmania University in Hyderabad and then worked as a lawyer. In 1985 he entered politics and was a member of the BJP in the Legislative Assembly of Andhra Pradesh until 1998. In 1998 he was BJP chief in Andhra Pradesh and elected to Lok Sabha in the 1998 general election, where he represented the constituency of Karimnagar. From 1999 he became Minister of State for Internal Affairs and later Minister of State for Trade and Industry in the Vajpayee III cabinet .

He was appointed governor of Maharashtra on August 30, 2014. His appointment was made by the 13th Indian President Pranab Mukherjee after the resignation of Kateekal Sankaranarayanan . From September 2, 2016 to October 6, 2017, he was also governor of Tamil Nadu .

Private

Rao is married to Vinoda Rao. He has three brothers including C. Rajeshwara Rao who was a member and leader in the Communist Party of India . Many of his relatives live in the United States .

He is a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh .
