Edward "Eddie" Dougherty (* 17th July 1915 in Brooklyn , New York ; † 14. December 1994 in New York City ) was an American jazz - drummer .

Eddie Dougherty began playing drums at the age of 13 and made his first appearances in Dickie Wells ' band at Dickie Wells' club in Harlem in the early 1930s . As a sideman, he worked in the 1930s on recordings of Taft Jordan , Frank Froeba , Mildred Bailey , Harry James , Billie Holiday (" Strange Fruit ", 1939), Frankie Newton , Pete Johnson and Meade Lux Lewis ; In 1940 he played with Keny Watts and his Kilowatts, replacing Dave Tough in Bud Freemana Orchestra; after that he played with Art Tatum , Joe Sullivan , Benny Carter , Benny Morton and James P. Johnson in the early 1940s . In his later years he took part in the recordings of Cliff Jackson , Mary Lou Williams , Clyde Bernhardt , Wilbur De Paris , Teddy Wilson and Albert Nicholas and was active as a musician until the 1980s.
