Benny Morton (* 31 January 1907 in New York City , New York ; † 28. December 1985 ) was a (big band) Jazz - trombonist of Swing .

Life

Morton had his first engagement in 1923 in the band of Clarence Holiday (the father of Billie Holiday ) in Harlem , while he attended school during the day. He played 1927-1929 and 1931-1932 with Fletcher Henderson , 1932-1937 with Don Redman and then until 1939 with Count Basie . During this time he accompanied some Billie Holiday recordings with other Basie musicians. Morton also played in the bands of Chick Webb and Raymond Scott . In the 1940s he played in smaller combos with Teddy Wilson (from 1940), Joe Sullivan and Edmond Hall (from 1943), all in the Café Society Club (the big bands had stopped touring during the war). From 1946 he had his own band. He played in Broadway orchestras (so 2 ​​years in Jamaica with Lena Horne ) and from 1959 in the orchestra of the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
