Israel Crosby (* 19th January 1919 in Chicago ; † 11. August 1962 ) was an American jazz - bassist of swing and modern jazz .

Live and act

Israel Crosby first learned the trumpet and then switched to bass in 1934. At the beginning of his musical career in 1935/36 he played with Albert Ammons in Chicago; there were also recordings with Roy Eldridge , Jess Stacy , Jimmie Noone and Gene Krupa , with whom he recorded the Blues Of Israel in 1935. From 1936 to 1938 he was a member of Fletcher Henderson's band , where he replaced John Kirby ; then he played in the bands of Horace Henderson (1940) and Teddy Wilson . In smaller ensembles under his own name and with Edmond Hall's Quartet ( Profoundly Blue 1941), Charlie Christian , Benny Goodman , Chu Berry , Art Hodes , Coleman Hawkins 1944, Jimmy Yancey , Georgie Auld and Bill Russo , Crosby recorded numerous records. 1951 to 1953 he played in the trio of Ahmad Jamal ( The Three Strings ), one of the most important piano trios of the time; after that he worked for Benny Goodman. In 1956 he went back to Jamal, with whom he recorded his album At the Pershing: But Not for Me in 1958 .

Ahmad Jamal disbanded the trio in 1962 and Israel Crosby briefly switched to the quintet of pianist George Shearing , but Crosby became seriously ill. At the age of 43 before starting a trip to Europe, he died of a heart attack. George Shearing said of his colleague: He was one of the most inspiring musicians I have played with . In Ahmal Jamal's trio, which left plenty of room for the rhythm section to develop as a soloist, the co-founder of modern bass playing was able to fully develop his melodic inventiveness and his supporting, organ-like tone . His style of playing in the tradition of Jimmy Blanton , in a row with bassists like John Kirby , Walter Page or Milt Hinton , became the model for subsequent bassists like Wilbur Ware .
