The company is the largest open- die forge in southern Germany and produces components under the name Edelstahl Rosswag for the following industries: power plant construction, pump construction, special machine construction, aviation , medical technology , energy technology , gear manufacturing, tool construction and vehicle construction. In 2015, around 200 people were employed in the commercial department, production (forge, metal 3D printing ) and finishing ( turning , milling, eroding). history

Stainless steel Rosswag

On September 2, 1911, the Grand Ducal District Office in Durlach approved the establishment of a façon forge and mechanical workshop. The founders of the company were Ernst Wenz and August Roßwag. In 1924 his son, August Roßwag, joined his father's business as an apprentice. Another step was the construction of the mechanical workshop in the middle of Kleinsteinbach (today part of the Pfinztal municipality) in the following year (1925).

In 1972 the entire company was relocated from the local area; a manually controlled ring rolling mill was put into operation in 1979, which was replaced by a numerically controlled ring rolling mill in 1984. In the late 1990s, a production hall for mechanical cutting was built.

The extension for the forge, heat treatment and sawmill was inaugurated in 2000 and an additional ring rolling mill was also put into operation. The new administration building was completed in 2008. Also in 2008, the new finishing department was built. Since 2009, the company has been able to machine parts weighing up to 4 tons with a new hydraulic press.

Rosswag Engineering

In 2014 a new division was founded under the name Rosswag Engineering. The employees in this area deal with the additive manufacturing process metal 3D printing ( selective laser melting , SLM). For this purpose, an SLM 280 HL from SLM Solutions Group AG was purchased and put into operation. At the beginning of 2017, two SLM 280 HL with double laser systems were procured. At the end of 2016, a new building for the area was also built on the company premises and inaugurated in early 2017.

Industrial sectors

Rosswag has developed activities in numerous industrial sectors in a forging tradition that goes back over 100 years. Components can be found in plant and power plant construction as well as in the areas of offshore wind farms , motor sports and in the aerospace industry . The company is also present with components in the energy technology sector . In the Intercity-Express (ICE) of Deutsche Bahn, as well as in the Ariane rocket of ESA or in the new Airbus A380, there are components that are manufactured by Rosswag.

The company operates under the Edelstahl Rosswag brand with a tradition of forging going back more than 100 years, but is also active in historical products. The clapper for the rebuilt Frauenkirche in Dresden was made here as well as the 380 kg clapper for the Gloriosa in Erfurt Cathedral. For this purpose, the company developed a special fine-grain structural steel (RSK 100), which bells (mostly made of bronze) are less mechanically stressed when they hit the clapper and thus enable a longer service life. Further noteworthy commissioned work in the area of bell clappers in 2011 was a new clapper for the Pummerin in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and ironwork on a new clapper for the St. Peters bell in Cologne Cathedral. In 2016, 15 new clappers were forged for the bells in Freiburg Cathedral. In 2017, the clapper was forged for the Cathedral of the Redemption of the Romanian People in Bucharest.

The Rosswag Engineering division builds on this traditional business operation and also opens up new industrial areas such as tool and special machine construction. The focus is on consulting, process and product development in the field of metal 3D printing and not exclusively on the production of large-scale components.

Awards

The company regularly takes part in competitions. The following successes can be recorded (as of 2017).

In 2016, the company received the German Raw Material Efficiency Award 2016 from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy . A joint project between Edelstahl Rosswag and Rosswag Engineering was submitted, in which forged remnants are recycled into metal powder. In this way, complex, function-optimized structures are then built on forged base bodies, creating a hybrid forged SLM component. At the award ceremony on February 16, 2017, the company was named one of five winners.

With the hybrid component ForgeBrid , Rosswag GmbH reached the final of the German Innovation Award 2016.

In October 2016, Rosswag GmbH was named one of the 100 resource-efficient companies in Baden-Württemberg. The project submitted was also the innovative production chain behind the ForgeBrid.

In April 2016 Rosswag received the “ThinKing Prize” from Leichtbau BW for the lightweight solution of the month of April.

Rosswag received the Baden-Württemberg Business Medal in 2012 and the Baden-Württemberg State Innovation Prize in 2018 .
