Edgar Bryan's naturalistic documentary style from his years with the US Air Force, some of which he spends in Germany illustrating the fall of the Berlin Wall , outgrows him in the direction of moderate realism . His paintings are multi-layered and legible and overlay ironic wit and seriousness, which can result in a wide range of interpretations. In terms of content, two classic genres usually determine Edgar Bryan's paintings: the self-portrait and the still life . In the form of the allegorical self-portrait, Edgar Bryan deals with his existence as a painter. Addressing the problems of his profession with irony and wit, he often shows himself in his pictures with a strained gaze in front of a canvas or illustrates his person in The Unknown Country (2004) with a naively astonished expression in the autumnal deciduous forest, whose colorful leaves dancing down the artistic game symbolize with colors and shapes. The painter's caricature-like look is particularly striking. In his earlier works he is reminiscent of mimic studies of the New Objectivity of the 1920s and gives the works ironic traits.

Edgar Bryan's paintings are characterized by a restrained melancholy , which is also underlined by the coloring, and the figures seem strangely abandoned with themselves and in the situations in which they find themselves.
