Edgar Erdfelder

Edgar Erdfelder (born December 18, 1953 in Göttingen ) is a German psychologist . He is Professor of Cognitive Psychology and Differential Psychology at the University of Mannheim and has been Vice-Rector for Research and Young Scientists there since 2018 .

Life

Edgar Erdfelder studied psychology, German literature and history at the University of Göttingen and graduated with a diploma in psychology in 1980. He then did his doctorate at the University of Trier and obtained his doctorate with his dissertation The development of psychometric intelligence over the life span: Aspects of a general psychological approach . From 1984 to 2001 he held various positions at the Psychological Institute of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn , where he also completed his habilitation in 2000.

From 2001 to 2002 he was professor for psychological methodology at the University of Giessen . Since April 2002 he has been professor and holder of the chair for cognitive psychology and differential psychology at the University of Mannheim .

At the University of Mannheim, Erdfelder was Dean of Studies for the Faculty of Social Sciences from 2004–2011 and has been Vice Rector for Research and Young Academics since 2018 . From 2016–2019 he was the spokesman for the Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS) at the University of Mannheim and academic director of the Center of Doctoral Studies in Social and Behavioral Sciences (CDSS). In addition, from 2017–2018 he was spokesperson for the DFG Research Training Group "Statistical Modeling in Psychology" (SMiP).

His main research interests are memory research (in particular episodic memory , memory and judgment deceptions , source memory ), cognitive aging and the methodological foundations of experimental psychology .

Together with Axel Buchner , Franz Faul and Albert-Georg Lang, he has been developing the G * Power computer program since 1992 for the calculation of power analyzes for many different statistical tests. Since then, the software has been used in many psychological work, which was made possible by the free usage options.
