history

It is at least the oldest European journal that has "Psychologie" in its name. Wilhelm Wundt , who founded the first experimental psychological institute in Leipzig in 1879 , had founded the journal Philosophische Studien 7 years earlier in 1883 , where he and his colleagues also published experimental psychological work. Since he saw himself as a philosopher , he wanted to see his new psychology as a branch of philosophy. It was not until 1906 that he renamed the journal Psychological Studies (New Series of Philosophical Studies) .

The magazine was initially published by Hermann Ebbinghaus and changing co-editors ( Artur König , WA Nagel ) and was published by Johann Ambrosius Barth Verlag . The empirical scientific orientation expressed itself z. B. by the addition "and physiology of the sense organs". It was also the organ of the German Society for Psychology , which was founded in 1904 as the Society for Experimental Psychology. Ebbinghaus was also part of the initiative committee, the scientific orientation of the journal corresponded to the goals of this society. It was later made by F. Schumann and J. Rich. Ewald published.

The magazine did not appear between 1945 and 1953.

During the time of the GDR it appeared again from 1954 as a magazine for psychology and was combined with the magazine for applied psychology and character studies (further as subtitle) (until 1963) and with the magazine for applied psychology and language & cognition (until 2006) published by Johann Ambrosius Barth Verlag Leipzig. The first editor and re-founder was Kurt Gottschaldt until 1962. Werner Fischel followed . In the 1970s and 1980s, the editors were Friedhart Klix with Hans-Dieter Schmidt and Hubert Sydow. During this time it was also internationally oriented. B. from Switzerland, Austria and the Federal Republic of Germany. In the 1990s, Friedhart Klix, Winfried Hacker and Elke van der Meer were the editors. Joh. Ambrosius Barth Leipzig / Heidelberg is given as the publisher.

Then the Hogrefe Verlag Göttingen took over the magazine. The first managing editor was Bernd Leplow. After switching to the English language, the magazine was briefly called the Journal of Psychology.

Some supplement volumes have also been published, for example research on psychodiagnostics and psychotherapy of psychological undesirable developments Supplement 1 1981; Research on phylogenetic behavioral adaptations Supplement 4 1932 with Günter Tembrock ; Psychological aspects of VDU work as Supplement 5 1983, Macinter - Selected papers from workshops organized by the Network of Man-Computer Interaction Research (Macinter) of the International Union of Psychology as Supplement 9 1987 and Supplement 11 1991 Experimental Psychologie heute - 100 Jahre Zeitschrift für Psychology as a symposium report.
