Edgar Roquette-Pinto

Edgar Roquette-Pinto (born September 25, 1884 in Rio de Janeiro , † October 18, 1954 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian writer , ethnologist , anthropologist and doctor . He was a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras and is considered the father of radio in Brazil.

Life

Roquette-Pinto studied medicine at the Faculdade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro until 1905 . He was assistant in anthropology at the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro (1906).

In 1912 Edgar Roquette-Pinto took part in an expedition to Rondônia and lived for some time with the Nambikwara , who until then had no contact with "civilization". He collected extensive ethnographic material and published Rondonia (1916), a classic of Brazilian anthropological literature.

In 1926 he became director of the National Museum , where he began to build up the largest collection of documentaries in Brazil.

First radio in Brazil

In 1922, a radio antenna was installed on the Corcovado at the exhibition on the occasion of the centenary of Brazil's independence from the Americans . Roquette Pinto convinced the Brazilian Academy of Sciences to buy the equipment. In 1922, the first radio station in Brazil was founded, the Rádio Sociedade do Rio de Janeiro . Roquette-Pinto became its first director. In 1925 Albert Einstein visited the radio station.

Works

Edgar Roquette – Pinto translated works by Goethe into Portuguese , among other things . He was one of the co-founders of the First Goethe Society in Brazil. In 1932 he received the Goethe Medal for Art and Science for his services to Goethe .
