Edition 46

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The complete design of the weekly SZ supplement Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin is transferred to a contemporary artist once a year for issue no. 46. A public exhibition and extensive reporting in the publisher's own printed and electronic media supplements the publication of the art project, which was realized in collaboration with Süddeutscher Verlag . The guest artists are international protagonists of the contemporary art scene. Putting the design of an entire issue in the hands of an external artist is still unique for this type of media and this size of circulation. In 2009, this special edition has its own offspring for the first time: a limited, numbered and hand-signed special edition that was created by the current Edition 46 designer Paulina Olowska from elements from previous SZ magazines. The publisher offers the offprint framed and unframed.

history

Even before the first birthday of the SZ-Magazin, which was launched in 1990, the idea of entrusting an artist with the complete design of an issue was born. Because the first issue based on this concept was published in the 46th calendar week, the project was christened the corresponding date: Edition 46.

After Anselm Kiefer in 1990, the artists Francesco Clemente , Jeff Koons , Jenny Holzer , Per Kirkeby , Sigmar Polke , Richard Prince , Christian Boltanski and Matthew Barney designed Edition 46 in the following years.

In 1999 the American artist Alex Katz produced the last edition for the time being under the project title “One Night in New York”. According to the publisher, the cause was the art market, which had become so complex and hysterical that a small editorial team like that of SZ-Magazin was finding it increasingly difficult to manage projects of this magnitude.

After a break of almost seven years, the now expanded editorial team revitalized the legendary Edition 46. This time the Milanese Francesco Vezzoli designed the relaunch of the art edition under the same working title as the last edition project, “One Night in New York” . In 2008 Marcel Dzama made a guest appearance in issue 46. The current version from 2009 comes from Paulina Olowska's art smithy.

concept

The SZ-Magazin appears every Friday as a supplement in the reputable national daily newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. The SZ publication thus expands the classic range of quality journalism on the subjects of politics, business, feature pages, sport and the local every week to include creative and original text and image contributions on the subject of contemporary lifestyle with the demand for individuality and quality.

Once a year, the concept of selection and presentation of contemporary art and design opens up for an external artist who takes over the complete design of a magazine. The prerequisite for this is that the works shown appear for the first time and exclusively in SZ-Magazin. In this way, the magazine not only ensures the exclusive publication of the resulting work, but also ensures that the work of the external designer can be found under the image umbrella of the SZ magazine and expand the range without restricting creativity and artist freedom.

In addition to the publication of the booklet, the publisher organizes additional events and platforms on which the artist's entire oeuvre is published and communicated. This primarily includes an accompanying special exhibition that was realized in 2007, 2008 and 2009 in the Pinakothek der Moderne. There, the artist can supplement his works for the SZ-Magazin with additional works of his own in order to finally position his overall appearance in a context-specific manner to the environment and concept of the exhibition. The project is communicated by SZ-Verlag via all conventional and electronic publication channels of SZ Magazin (www.sz-magazin.de, newsletter, Twitter etc.) and the superordinate Süddeutsche Zeitung (print edition of SZ, sueddeutsche.de etc.).

The development phase of an Edition 46

When designing an Edition 46, a much longer planning phase is necessary than with a regular edition. There would be exceptions for certain artists, but planning for such an edition begins nine months before publication.
