Due to the large number of structures that still exist, the focus is on civilian air defense from the Second World War . The club members also dedicate themselves to facilities without a military background, for example the sewer system , the inner-city pneumatic tube , underground brewery relics or unfinished subway stations .

Maintenance / expansion of the facilities

An air raid shelter in the Gesundbrunnen underground station was prepared, reconstructed and built into the “Berlin Underworld Museum” by the volunteer hours of the members. In 2000, the association took over the supervision of the NBC protection system under Blochplatz am Humboldthain - a legacy of the Cold War - which opened up new topics from that time, such as escapes to West Berlin through the sewer system, ghost stations and storage sites of the Senate Reserve .

The flak tower in Volkspark Humboldthain has been partially made accessible again by members of the association and can be visited as part of a tour. Furthermore, accompanied by ZDF, an access to the flak tower covered with rubble in Volkspark Friedrichshain was uncovered by the association and the interior of the bunker was explored.

Own publisher

The association has been publishing its research results in its own publishing house, Edition Berliner Unterwelten, since 2010 .

public perception

In the summer of 2018, around 500 members belonged to the association. Every year around 333,000 visitors visit the association's tours and events. The association gained national recognition by awarding the German Prize for Monument Protection in 2006 to the chairman of the association Dietmar Arnold and his brother Ingmar on November 13, 2006 in Weimar . According to the German National Committee for the Protection of Monuments, the association has made a name for itself in “the pioneering development and mediation of the monumental underground buildings in Berlin”.
