Reviews

The political scientist Michael Lühmann summarized the publishing program in 2007 in Die Zeit : “Praise and cheers for the Ministry for State Security (MfS) and the National People's Army of the GDR (NVA), paired with pamphlets against the West German judiciary alternate with diatribes Western secret services from ”. "The offensive whitewashing the SED dictatorship in the finally program is the edition east, trying to undress from the horrors of the socialist regime, with its publications, the German Democratic Republic." "For the colorful Themenpotpourri the falsification of history , a team of authors is responsible, the one who's who of GDR oppressive apparatus is the same. ”“ But the books and authors of edition ost apostrophize precisely this freedom, contrasting the historically guaranteed mainstream with a brutal focus on historical revisionism. The publisher offers the sectarian circles of former Stasi cadres a stage that they use more and more aggressively. "

According to Manfred Jäger from Deutschlandfunk , Edition Ost was often accused of being a specialist publisher specializing in apologetics for former GDR functionaries from the SED, NVA and state security. For example, from Hans Bentzien's book on the popular uprising in the GDR of June 17, 1953 , which appeared in the series, the reader learns information about the mentality and limitations of an intelligent SED functionary; the author does not deal with the results of historical research.

According to the historian Sven Felix Kellerhoff , the SED's propaganda lies from the Cold War are warmed up in rows in the publisher's books and the Stasi and GDR crimes are played down by “history falsifiers ” like Siegfried Hähnel .
