Edmond Jouhaud, 1961

Edmond Jouhaud (born April 2, 1905 in Ain-boucefar near Oran , Algeria , † September 4, 1995 in Royan ) was a French general . He was in 1961 involved in a coup attempt to the independence of Algeria to prevent from France.

Life

Jouhaud was born in French North Africa as a descendant of pioneers of Corsican origin . After his school education in Algeria, he was accepted into the Saint-Cyr military school in 1924 . During the Second World War , Jouhaud was a leading cadre of the Forces françaises de l'intérieur in the Bordeaux region . At the end of the war he held the rank of colonel. In 1948 he became Chief of Staff of the Air Force in Tunisia . He was then transferred to French Indochina . In 1954 he acted as commander in chief of the local air force.

He was one of four generals who tried on April 21, 1961 by a coup against President De Gaulle to prevent the independence of Algeria . At that time he was the Inspector General of the Air Force in North Africa. After the failed coup, he became Raoul Salan's deputy in the right-wing terrorist group Organization de l'armée secrète (OAS), which fought on the one hand against the Front de Liberation Nationale and on the other against the regular French army. While Salan fled to Francoist Spain , Jouhaud stayed out of loyalty to his place of birth.

Jouhaud was arrested in March 1962 by a military court in summary proceedings sentenced to death . However, after Raoul Salan was sentenced to only one prison term by a civil court, public opinion turned against Jouhaud's execution . After calling on remaining OAS activists to lay down their arms, Charles de Gaulle commuted his death sentence to prison, from which he was released in 1967. A law under François Mitterrand brought about his rehabilitation in 1982 .

Before the coup, Jouhaud was one of the most highly decorated officers in the French military. Its political orientation can be described as pro-American .

Awards and honors

Jouhaud also received many other foreign awards. The French city of Saint-Laurent-du-Var is the only city in France that Edmond Jouhaud worships. There is a square named after him near the town hall, as well as a school and a swimming pool that use his name.
