Edmund Reader (* 1729 in Irresheim ; † April 26, 1786 Koblenz - Metternich ) was the 44th abbot of Marienstatt Abbey .

Live and act

In 1751, Reader made his profession in the Abbey of Marienstatt and was ordained a priest three years later. From September 2, 1756, Reader was assistant chaplain until 1768 , and from 1761 until 1770 he also took over the monastic office of administrator ( Cellerar ). "On July 14, 1770, in the presence of the father abbot von Heisterbach, he was elected coadjutor of the resigned abbot Bernhard Colonia, against which the Saynic government protested immediately". On August 20, 1770, four days after the death of Abbot Colonia, he was elected 44th Abbot of Marienstatt. The blessing he received on 11 November 1770 in Cologne by Auxiliary Bishop Earl Koenigseck-Rotenfels.

Under Abbot Edmund, the Marienstatter Abbey divided the Cistercian priory in Bottenbroich near Kerpen into ( incorporation ) in 1776 . The Marienstatter already had patronage over the parish church of Kierdorf (Erftstadt) , but through the incorporation they were given notable farms. At the same time, the integration meant great effort for Abbot Edmund and the convent , because the priory was economically impoverished and had to be reorganized financially. That's why the priory was turned into a provost's office. Father Ambrosius Hovius took over economic responsibility. (The monastery complex (except for the church) was demolished in 1783.)

Abbot Edmund Leser then took on another task:

“In 1782 Emperor Josef II. Edmund Leser appointed Elector Max Friedrich of Cologne and Abbot Eugenius Reinartz von Kamp (Altenkamp) as imperial commissioners for the Imperial Burtscheid Abbey, a women's convent formerly subordinate to the Heisterbach Abbey. While the elector was responsible for worldly matters, Abbot Edmund and Abbot Eugen took care of spiritual matters. The visitation of the three commissioners took place from July 17 to August 5, 1782 and recommended the appointment of a coadjutor, who only took office after the imperial confirmation on January 2, 1786 and thus after Reader's resignation. "

Abbot Edmund resigned on September 6, 1784, because he was seriously ill. He went to the Rhein-Metterich (Metternich) monastery courtyard and died on April 26, 1786.
