Edmund Uher (also Edmond Uher, Hungarian: Uher Ödön , born June 30, 1892 in Sibiu , Hungary ; † March 17, 1989 Cap d'Antibes, France) was an entrepreneur and the inventor of the photographic typesetting system "Uhertype".

Edmund Uher initially worked in the film industry in Hungary and ran a design office . In the 1920s he made various developments for the graphic industry and in 1927 made contact with MAN Druckmaschinen AG in Augsburg . In 1930 Uher received several English patents for his photo typesetting machine and another hand setting instrument. After founding the development company Uher & Co. in Munich in the 1930s, he began building prototypes in the southern German mechanical workshops on Lake Starnberg . Uhers limited partner MAN (at times also together with Messerschmitt and BMW) financed the tests. Jan Tschichold designed 12 typefaces for the machine. In 1935 the “Penrose Annual” published a sample of the Uhertype machine as an advertisement, which promised new freedom in design. Before 1939, however, the experiments with the machine were ended and the only two prototypes were sold. During the Second World War , Uher took on orders for the aircraft industry and opened branches in Vienna and Budapest. In 1944 he employed 6,000 people. After the war, he rebuilt Uher -Werke GmbH in Munich and Vienna, but later sold his shares in the Munich plant to a co-owner and concentrated on the Vienna branch. From that point on, the company no longer dealt with typesetting machines .

After 1945, Uher constructed, among other things, a fully automatic V-belt transmission for mopeds and scooters, as had the DKW Hobby , which was built from 1954 to 1957 . He also developed automatic transmissions for cars.

In 1970 Edmund Uher handed over the management of the Vienna Society to his son Alfons. At the end of August 1987, at the age of 95, Uher was honored again with what was probably his last interview with Münchner Merkur .
