Édouard Dujardin (born October 10, 1861 in Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt , † October 31, 1949 in Paris ) was a French writer and editor as well as a social, literary and art critic .

Life

Édouard Dujardin was friends with Stéphane Mallarmé and the French symbolists . In 1885 he founded the Revue Wagnerienne . From 1917 to 1928 he headed the Cahiers Idéalistes Francais . In the 1930s, his view of society became radicalized. At the anti-fascist "International Writers' Congress in Defense of Culture" (Paris 1935) he gave a speech in which he vehemently pleaded for "a new culture": "The revolution must not take over either the culture or the institutions of the old society." His speech ended: "The proletariat needs a proletarian culture. The revolution needs a revolutionary culture." However, during the time of the German occupation (1940–1944), he also published writings that are considered close to collaboration.

Dujardin is with his novel Les lauriers sont coupés (1887) (German: Cut laurel , The laurel trees are cut ) as a forerunner of the narrative technique of the inner monologue . He had a decisive influence on the development of the novel in the 20th century, especially with Marcel Proust and James Joyce . The Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler introduced this technique into German literature after reading his novel.
